Chai tea ; its origins, its benefits...

We tell you all about it !

Have you ever tried chai tea? With its sweet and spicy flavors, it has the advantage of being a very comforting drink. At L’Occasion Café, we serve it with hot milk to add creaminess (and even more comfort ☺️). In fact, it’s traditionally drunk with milk, which can be consumed hot or cold! 🤗

As well as being gourmet, it’s a drink with many health benefits. But then, are you aware of all the effects of your chai latte? In this article we take a look back at its origins and benefits. 🤎

What is chai tea ?

INGREDIENTS

Chai tea is a bit of a cheat, as it’s actually a blend of several spices! The base of the blend is black tea, accompanied by ginger and cinnamon. Then, every brand, every café and every country likes to add its own little personal touch 💫.

In India (where chai originated), tea is traditionally blended with cloves and cardamom. But some chai tea drinkers wanted to personalize it and revisited the recipe. Now you can find chai tea with aniseed, pink berries, vanilla, green tea or rooibos!

Chai tea is a real invitation to travel and creativity! 🫶

OUR RECIPE AT L'OCCASION CAFÉ

So yes, we created our own blend at Occasion Café ☕️. With a base of black tea, we kept to tradition by adding cinnamon, ginger, black pepper, cardamom and cloves!

We infuse a good dose of tea in a little water for a good 5 minutes, then add the cinnamon, followed by our hot, frothy milk. And, of course, we finish it all off with a super latte art. ☺️

Chai benefits

CHAI TEA FOR EACH MOMENT

Chai latte is a drink that has many benefits for the human body, which is why it can be drunk all day long! In fact, it’s perfect for waking up, thanks to the caffeine (also known as theine) contained in black tea, which will give you a nice boost. 🤗

Then, thanks to the many spices it contains, it will promote digestion. It will therefore be effective if you drink it at the end of a meal. Lastly, it remains a gourmet, comforting drink that will go down very well at any time, especially at snack time 😉.

However, chai latte does contain caffeine. So for those with a low tolerance to caffeine intake, we’d still advise against drinking it in the evening. For those who’d like to know more about the benefits and risks of caffeine it’s right here. 😌

WHY IS IT SO HEALTHY ?

Now that we’ve listed its ingredients, it’s time to tell you why they’re so good for the body (if you don’t already know 🥸).

Tea as a natural antioxidant: Indeed, as you know, tea in general is good for your health. It contains many antioxidants that will boost your immune system 💪. We’ve already told you about matcha tea, which contains a lot of them. Tea is sometimes said to contain more antioxidants (particularly polyphenol) than some fruits and vegetables! 🥦 So, tea combined with the spices we’re about to list has many positive effects.

Anti-bacterial: Many spices help fight bacteria. Here, ginger, cloves, cinnamon and pepper are among these super-fighters 😝 ! Ginger in particular (which is a superhero after all) helps to soothe nausea and limit bloating.

Aids digestion: As you’ll have guessed, chai latte at the end of a meal is a great solution for good digestion. Thanks to ginger, as mentioned above, but not only! ✨ Cloves and pepper in particular. The latter accelerates digestion by releasing enzymes. So you’ll have understood that chai latte is one of the alternatives to help lose weight, if it’s not consumed with too much sugar and combined with a healthy diet. 🤗

The benefits of theine (or caffeine): Last but not least, caffeine itself contains numerous benefits! Helps concentration, provides antioxidants, improves memory… We’ve done a whole article about it if you’re interested 😌

So, with all that, which of chai’s effects has impressed you the most? (It’s hard to choose there are so many…)

We hope you’ve been able to find out more about this wonderful tea called chai! If you’ve never tried it, we’ll let you discover this healthy, gourmet drink. 😌
